O'Melia, Robert A.

Robert Addison O’Melia passed away at home on November 11, 2017.  Veteran’s Day was a suitable day for his sunrise passing as he was a proud Coast Guard veteran.

Bob was born on April 19, 1927 in Pittsburgh PA to John C and Gertrude S O’Melia.

He grew up in western PA, Providence RI; Troy NY and graduated from Westminster College in New Wilmington PA.  At Westminster, he met Margaret Jean Pollock, who became his wife of 68 years.

Bob had a long career in the YMCA.  He began working in Buffalo NY before taking a job to start up a YMCA in an old house in Hatboro PA, which is now, years later, a huge Y.  He then began specializing in the management of YMCA camps and conference centers in Pennsylvania and New Jersey as well as upstate New York.  He was an Executive Director of ORYMCA camps, now known as Fairview Lake YMCA Camps, for many years. He liked nothing better than being outdoors in nature, whether it be in the woods or by the ocean.  Bob not only enjoyed nature, he captured it in watercolor and acrylic paintings that adorn all of our homes.

After retiring from the YMCA, Bob began a second career as the Director of Parks and Recreation in South Orange, NJ.  That job also brought him in contact with nature, and he loved organizing events, such as the 4th of July festivities in the park.

After fully retiring, Bob enjoyed traveling with wife, Jean, who survives him, and spending time with his family.  His 90th birthday party featured a camping theme, and his cake was truly a “campfire” of candles!

Besides his wife, Bob is survived by his children, Linda O’Melia-Schroll (George), James R O’Melia (Lourdes, Milagros), John R O’Melia (Marilyn), and Laurie O’Melia-Bullock (Dennis); grandchildren Christopher O’Melia, Lourdes Kraft, Edward Schroll, Craig Schroll, Jean Schroll, Kate Alves, Douglas O’Melia, Scott Bullock, Kevin Bullock; and great grandchildren, Christopher, Evelyn, Emma, and Tahlia.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Private arrangements and online condolences through www.smith-taylor-ruggierofuneralhome.com   Donations can be made in his memory to the Fairview Lakes Camps in Newton NJ, SmileTrain, Eleventh-Hour Rescue, or OSCAR, where he adopted two beloved dogs.
