Daughter of the late Stephen and Irene (nee Harsha) Szorka, Barbara had a long career as a Civilian Employee with the United States Army Command at Picatinny Arsenal Dover, NJ, and later Alexandria VA as an Engineer Managing Executive. Following her retirement from the US Government, she worked as the Vice President of EME Consulting assisting businesses with contract proposals and agreement details for the US Government until 2022.

Through her many years of dedication to her profession, she earned the National Association of Professional Women Award as the Woman of the Year Award 2013-2014 for which Congress flew an American Flag over the Capitol in her honor. Barbara was a devoted Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother for her family.

Barbara was predeceased by her parents, her sister Lorraine Brown in 2012 and her brother-in-law Frank Brown in 2007. Survivors include her sons Gerald L. and his wife Connie Byrnes, and Kevin Byrnes as well as her longtime companion Darold Griffin of Fairfax Station VA. Also surviving are her grandchildren Jessica Brabender, Dustin Byrnes, Brandee Fitzpatrick and Cody Byrnes as well as her great grandchildren Halle, Lena and Nolan Brabender, Emma and Brielle Byrnes, James Fitzpatrick VI, and Ace Fitzpatrick.

Memorial visitation will be Saturday August 26, 2023 from 12 Noon to 2 PM with Memorial Services beginning at 2 PM in the Smith-Taylor-Ruggiero Funeral Home – One Baker Ave. (Rt. 46) Dover, NJ 07801. Online condolences can be made through www.smith-taylor-ruggeriofuneralhome.com.
