Hewitt, Richard J., age 67 of Mine Hill passed away Sunday, January 29, 2012, at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer center, NY. Born in Morristown, NJ, he grew up in Far Hills and on a dairy farm in Chester, NJ. Mr. Hewitt lived in Mine Hill for the past 39 yrs.
Richard was the son of the late Edward R. and Dorothy M. (Smith) Hewitt. Richard was a graduate of Bernard’s High School Class of 1962 where he was a star member of the football team. Following high school, he proudly enlisted in the US Air Force in March 1963 and served over seas until March 1967 with the Rank of Sgt. Richard was a retired truck driver for Dan Barclay Inc., Franklin NJ.
A life member and past chief (1981) of the Mine Hill Fire Dept., Richard was a dedicated and caring friend of many. A loving and devoted husband, father and brother, Richard never missed his children’s sporting events. Over the years, Richard enjoyed hunting, fishing, and watching professional sports and car racing. A caring and compassionate man, who enjoyed spending time with his family, Richard will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his loving wife of 44 years, Lynn (Duffy) Hewitt, his cherished daughter Michelle Hewitt, DVM of Netcong, as well as his loving sons Brian of Roxbury and Todd of Netcong and his children’s loving companions. Also surviving are his brothers Kenny of Chester and Donald of Califon, his sisters Leatrice Hewitt of Chester and Karen Hewitt of Somerville, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. Richard also had many beloved family pets: Puck, Sydney, Dixie, Dakota, PJ (deceased) and his favorite kitty Midgee (deceased).
Visitation will be in the Smith-Taylor-Ruggiero Funeral Home One Baker Ave. (Rt. 46), Dover, NJ Thursday February 2, 2012, from 3-5 and 7-9 PM. Funeral services will be held Friday February 3, 2012 at 11:00 AM in the funeral home. Entombment will immediately follow in the Locust Hill Cemetery Mausoleum Dover, NJ.
